Google AI Mode Ads Arrive in India: What Businesses Should Know
Google AI Mode ads have now gone live in India. Google is now showing ads inside and alongside AI Mode answers. The ads are named Sponsored and appear primarily on shopping and commercial searches. Google’s updates have always caused a whirlwind of changes across the digital world. But what does this addition mean for businesses? Let’s understand.
What are Google AI Mode Ads?
These are sponsored placements within Google’s conversational search experience. Here, people can ask more detailed questions and explore options. It must be noted that these paid placements are different from the unpaid AI-generated explanations and organic results that enable users to research a topic. According to Google, sponsored items will be labelled so readers can tell advertising apart from the surrounding experience.
AI Mode caters to more complex queries than a simple keyword search. These queries are three times longer than traditional searches. While a useful signal about intent-rich questions, it doesn’t serve as evidence that every query an Indian user types is as lengthy.
Which Campaigns Can Show in AI Mode?
As a business running campaigns on Google, here’s more on which campaigns would be shown in AI mode.
- Existing Campaigns: These become automatically eligible. Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns can serve in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Businesses do not need a new campaign or budget.
- Match Type Determines Your Reach: Broad match, AI Max for Search, Shopping, and Performance Max can match the user’s question and the wider conversational context. Exact and phrase match keywords only match direct, commercial-intent queries.
- Same Auction and Price Model: You pay per two models just like normal Search ads, either pay per click or by your conversion-based bidding. as with normal Search ads. There’s no extra charge.
- Text Ads and Shopping Ads: Per Google, it is also experimenting with other types, including local inventory ads and vehicle ads.
What’s Beyond Your Control?
Before your next budget review, here’s what you must also know.
- No Opt-Out: According to Google’s FAQ, you cannot target AI Overviews or AI Mode on their own. You cannot opt out of them separately from Search either.
- No Separate Report: Results from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in your standard campaign reports and search terms report. Per the AI Overviews help page, you cannot have segmented reporting for ads shown here. In other words, you will not have a separate AI Mode row to analyse its outcomes separately.
- No Voice Over AI’s Explanation: It is possible that Google adds a short, AI-written explainer near an ad. You cannot write, edit, approve or switch the explanation text.
Nevertheless, what’s worth noting is that two controls will continue to work in AI Mode. These are negative keywords and brand exclusions. You must leverage them as your primary levers. Partnering with a digital marketing agency, particularly one with proven expertise in Google Ads, will help you do that and optimise the potential benefits of this update.
What Should You Do Now?
Here’s a quick, yet useful to-do list for the next week.
- Determine Campaign Exposure: Map campaign match types, including broad match, AI Max, and Performance Max, to capture broad context in AI conversations, while phrase match captures targeted intent. Audit your budget allocation to predict spend changes before costs increase.
- Tighten Negative Keywords and Brand Exclusions: Conversational AI queries increase irrelevance and research-stage traffic. Protect budget by adding negative keywords for DIY, free tiers, and out-of-scope locations, while using brand exclusions for brand-isolated campaigns.
- Write Ads for Longer Questions: Detailed user prompts require hyper-specific ad copy matching intent, budget, and location. Update headlines, descriptions, and sitelinks to address core customer criteria.
- Make the Landing Page: Generic homepages drive high-intent clicks away. Therefore, drive ad traffic to pages that address the specific query, provide clear pricing/proof, and feature immediate call-to-action paths (calls, forms, or chat).
- Test Broader Matching on One Campaign: Scale reach by running broad match, AI Max, or Performance Max on a single baseline-tracked campaign first. Measure success with downstream metrics like cost per qualified lead and sales conversions, not just click volume.
- Read the Search Terms Report Weekly: Monitor search term reports weekly to identify emerging long-tail AI queries to either target or exclude. Cross-reference lead sources with CRM data to confirm whether these queries drive actual sales and revenue.
- Check Hindi and Hinglish Queries: Usually, Indian searchers type in mixed language. So, ensure your ads and landing pages cover terms people use more commonly while searching for something.
Example: A Pune-Based Tour Company
Earlier, users asked, “tour package to Jammu and Kashmir.” Now, they type more detailed queries. For instance, plan a 7-day Jammu and Kashmir trip for a family of five people in February 2026, under INR 90,000.
AI responds to this query with an itinerary, while including weather tips and an approximate budget. A question with commercial intent will have a Sponsored package from a tour company inside or beside the answer.
Google provides a slot to the tour operator with an ad and landing page that matches the full question. So, businesses that describe their offer in detail will win more Google AI Mode ad placements.
